SNM Proposed Name Change
Over the past several years, as the SNM continues to integrate molecular imaging into the organization’s programs, the leadership of the SNM and SNMTS has discussed the necessity of incorporating non-nuclear molecular imaging technologies into our education, journals and overall direction for the future. In reflecting on the name of the Society, this spring, the House of Delegates, National Council of Representatives and both the SNMTS Executive Board and SNM Board of Directors, agreed that it is time to review the name to determine whether or not it still fits who we are as an organization. In February 2011 a task force was formed, comprised of representation from the SNM and SNMTS membership, to discuss the options regarding changing our name.
The Task Force is recommending the following name change:
Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMI)
An article authored by Kathy Hunt, MS, CNMT, SNMTS President and Frederic Fahey, DSc., SNM Vice President-Elect, was published in the May 2011 issue of JNM Newsline. The article “Consideration of Name Change to the SNM,” includes detailed information on why a name change is being considered and some of the discussions within the SNM and SNMTS Boards.
In addition, another article authored by Carolyn Anderson, PhD, Name Change Task Force Chair, will be published in the November issue of JNM Newsline. This article will answer some questions posed by the membership as well as provide a brief overview of the potential expenses associated with the change.
This is an important point of consideration for the Society and we will continue to keep you apprised of new information as the discussion continues.
