About SNMMI
Society Overview
The Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI), headquartered in Reston, Va., is a nonprofit scientific and professional organization that promotes the science, technology and practical application of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging. SNMMI strives to be a leader in unifying, advancing and optimizing molecular imaging, with the ultimate goal of improving human health.
With 19,000 members worldwide, SNMMI represents nuclear and molecular imaging professionals, all of whom are committed to the advancement of the field. For more than 50 years, SNMMI members have developed—and continue to explore—innovations in medical imaging to allow for noninvasive diagnosis, management and treatment of diseases, benefiting countless patients. Members include physicians, technologists, physicists, pharmacists, scientists, laboratory professionals and more.
SNMMI provides leadership for advancing nuclear medicine and molecular imaging in the following key areas:
- Research: SNMMI provides a forum in which researchers and physicians can readily communicate and collaborate to speed the process of evaluating scientific and clinical research and integrating it into clinical practice. SNMMI screens and hosts presentation of 1,500 papers on translational and clinical nuclear and molecular imaging studies at SNMMI’s annual meeting. Also, through its Center for Molecular Imaging Innovation and Translation and its Clinical Trials Network, SNMMI leads the way in groundbreaking research for nuclear and molecular imaging.
- Publications: SNMMI’s flagship journal, The Journal of Nuclear Medicine, is the highest-rated journal in all medical imaging. The Journal of Nuclear Medicine Technology focuses specifically on issues of interest to technologists. In addition, SNMMI publishes a number of books, newsletters and other products of interest to its members.
- Education and training: SNMMI’s Annual Meeting and Mid-Winter Meeting provide the nuclear and molecular imaging community with robust education programs on the latest advances in the field. SNMMI also offers Maintenance of Certification courses as well as live and online learning opportunities through its Learning Center.
- Professional standards and guidance for best practices: SNMMI works with its members to develop practice guidelines and accreditation standards.
- Advocacy in the public policy and regulatory arenas: SNMMI is a leading player in providing guidance to legislators, regulators, activists and others involved in shaping the policies surrounding nuclear and molecular imaging. On behalf of its members, SNMMI advocates for improved policies and legislation for research, funding and reimbursement for molecular imaging.
- Forums: SNMMI plays an important role in creating forums within which medical professionals from all medical disciplines collaborate on improving patient care.The society maintains strong relationships with international societies of nuclear medicine, universities, independent laboratories and suppliers of both equipment and radiopharmaceuticals.
The SNMMI national headquarters is located in Reston, Va., and 13 state/regional chapters are located throughout the United States and Canada. As a volunteer organization, SNMMI is governed by a policy-making board of directors, a house of delegates, committees and councils.
SNMMI Code of Interactions with Companies
Background: SNMMI actively seeks and encourages the involvement of trusted, knowledgeable individuals in all of its decision-making, and encourages the expression of diverse views on important issues facing the practice and advancement of nuclear medicine. Most active members of the SNMMI belong to multiple organizations that have interests that overlap and sometimes conflict with the interests of the SNMMI.
Scope of the Policy: This policy is designed to provide guidance with potential, perceived and real conflicts of interest as well as employment agreements in order to maximize, with appropriate safeguards, the participation of all SNMMI members in all of its activities.
